Dubailand was launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in October 2003 as a tourism project. As announced at the launch, it was to be built on about two billion square feet (roughly 186 km²) and to include 45 major projects and 200 sub-projects. Tatweer was the original master developer; it was later merged with Dubai Properties and Sama Dubai into Dubai Properties Group. The masterplan was placed under review in late 2008, during the financial crisis. By 2010, Dubai Sports City and MotorCity within Dubailand had been completed and had residents. A newer residential community in the district is Sobha Reserve by Sobha Realty, a villa project in Wadi Al Safa 2, which is part of Dubailand.
