The Opus

The Opus is a mixed-use building developed by Omniyat on Al A'amal Street in Business Bay, Dubai. It was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects; Zaha Hadid unveiled the design in 2007 and died in 2016, before the building was finished. The CTBUH Skyscraper Center lists it at 93 m with 21 floors above ground and 5 below, with hotel, serviced-apartment and office functions; Multiplex is listed as main contractor.

The building is formed by two glazed towers joined at the base and the top so that they read as a single cube, with an eight-storey void cut through its centre. A four-storey atrium links the towers at ground level and a three-storey bridge spans the void above it.

The ME Dubai hotel, operated by Meliá, opened in the building in March 2020 with 74 rooms and 19 suites; its interiors were also designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. In October 2023 Omniyat announced the completion and handover of The Opus Residences, which it says are managed by ME Dubai.

01Design2007 · CONCEPT

Zaha Hadid unveiled the design for The Opus in 2007. The scheme places two towers side by side and joins them at the bottom and top, so the building reads as a cube with an amorphous eight-storey void carved through its middle. Dezeen credits the design to Zaha Hadid, Patrik Schumacher and Christos Passas.

02Construction2016 — 2019 · BUILD

Zaha Hadid died in 2016, before the building was finished. In October 2018 Omniyat began handing over the commercial units to office occupiers. Completion had originally been due in 2018, but construction delays pushed it back; Dezeen reported in 2020 that the exterior had been completed in 2019.

The ME Dubai hotel, the first ME by Meliá hotel in the Middle East, opened in The Opus on 1 March 2020, with interiors also designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. In October 2023 Omniyat announced that The Opus Residences were complete and handed over.
